Caribana - Joanna's Story
I went to Caribana when I was 16 with a few friends. There weren't any wristbands at the time, everyone just danced and enjoyed themselves. The idea of VIP and non-VIP didn't really exist. It was about everyone there, costume or not, just having a great time. At one point I was dancing in a huge part of the parade and I saw Kardinal Offishal who I loved at the time. He actually picked me up and danced with me for a few minutes which was awesome and not something you can expect to have happen to you anywhere else.
How is this object or story important to you?

This story is important to me because it was the first time I had ever gone to something like Caribana with just my friends.

What does it add to the story of Toronto?

Caribana is a huge event in Toronto. My story brings a different version of the festival of when it was slightly smaller and shows the growth of Caarbana to what it is today.
